FAQ’s

I understand that Counselling may be a new experience for you and that you will perhaps want to know more about it. So here are some questions that I am often asked, however if there is anything else you want to know, please do contact me by telephone or email.

What is Counselling?

The definition of Counselling is:
“the provision of professional assistance and guidance in resolving personal or psychological problems.” (Oxford Dictionary)

Counselling is therefore appropriate if you want help with a particular issue or period in your life. This might be a relationship breakdown, a bereavement or some other difficulty that you want to express in a safe and confidential place and to find ways in which you can understand and accept the situation and move forward in your life.

How long is each consultation?

Each consultation will last for 50 minutes. It is important to arrive on time as if you are late, the session will still end at the same time in consideration of other clients.

How many sessions will I need?

Each client has individual needs, so we can discuss this in the initial consultation. It will depend on the issues that you wish to address, however there is no commitment for a specific number of sessions. As a guide, six sessions at weekly intervals will give you the chance to work with me and to see if the work we do together is beneficial. After that time, you can continue for a longer term if you wish - it is completely up to you.

Are the sessions confidential?

Counselling can only work if the relationship between the client and Counsellor is one of complete trust so you can be assured that the sessions would take place in a totally confidential and safe environment. The only time that I would have to breach
confidentiality would be if there was a risk to yourself or someone close to you.

Is there a code of ethics that you follow?

I am an Registered Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and adhere to their ethical framework.

What happens if I have to cancel my session?

Sessions are all booked in advance, therefore I require 48 hours notice of cancellation otherwise the missed session will have to be paid for in full.

How do I start Counselling sessions?

To begin the process, we will have an initial 30-minute consultation where you can tell me about the issues that you wish to address and where I can find out about you and your background. At the end of this consultation, if you feel that I am the right person to help you, then we can book your first session. If, however, you decide that counselling is not for you then there is absolutely no obligation whatsoever to continue.

Are the Counselling rooms accessible?

My room at Shenley Brook End is accessible, however my room in Stony Stratford is reached by a flight of stairs.
